Hometown Heroes
Fournette and Mathieu have long been close friends as New Orleans natives. Both St. Augustine graduates, will battle for a Super Bowl ring after a life in sports that saw them cross paths everywhere from park ball to suiting up in purple-and-gold, both wearing the No. 7. With Fournette on the Bucs and Mathieu on the Chiefs, St. Augustine is guaranteed a Super Bowl win for an alumnus for the second year in a row. Let’s take a closer look at both of their journeys to Superbowl 55.
Leonard Fournette
Fournette is in a great position to be the Bucs’ X-factor because he’s fresh and ready after logging a career-low 97 carries over 13 games in the regular season. In what he’s described as a humbling year, Fournette’s newfound appreciation for football and how far he’s come might be his own X-factor. After a roller-coaster three-plus years in Jacksonville, in which he went through ups and downs on and off the football field, the former No. 4 overall pick was released right before the start of this season and eventually joined Tampa Bay.
Tyrann Mathieu
Tyrann Mathieu is not to be played with. He is making the most of his opportunity in Kansas City. His numbers alone are impressive. Mathieu has picked off five passes in the past seven games, and he returned one for a touchdown against New England earlier this season. Quarterback ratings plummet when they throw in his direction, and his versatility is evident in the fact that he has tackles-for-loss in three of his past five games. No wonder he was voted an All-Pro for the second straight year and the third time in his career.
LSU also has a bunch of active players on the roster. No matter who wins Superbowl 55 Louisiana will be represented well. GEAUX TIGERS.
