Review of WandaVision Episode 4
Spoilers ahead gang so fair warning:
Alright let’s get the pleasantries out of the way before we get into the morbidly disturbing reveal in the latest episode of WandaVision. Are we happy to see the return of Darcy Lewis to the MCU? Sure why not. What about the return of Jimmy Woo? Hell yeah. Always nice to have a character add some comic relief. Especially to a series that keeps venturing further and further into the bizarre and unknown, it’s a pleasant bit of comfort to see two familiar faces to help ground the narrative back into a sense of normalcy. And what the teased and lingering mystery about Monica Rambeau’s backstory? Oh yeah baby. Keep me hooked.
But let’s get to the main course. Let’s get to the turkey, the gravy, the stuffing, and the potatoes of this episode. I think everyone who’s watching the show all had an idea of what’s going on. We all could all assemble some of the pieces to what exactly Wanda was doing. We could see that she was creating a false reality. We could see that trapping real people, in a real town against their will in her ever evolving desire to recreate Pleasantville. What we didn’t know and what was revealed in this episode was where the hell Vision fit into this. And that is that Vision is STILL FUCKING DEAD.
But before we get into that, let’s backtrack a bit here and give some vital context to understand Wanda’s psyche and what exactly is going on. Her resume of trauma consists of:
So yeah. I think it’s obvious that Wanda has a little case of what’s called PTSD. So she’s entitled to want to feel safe. And she’s entitled to want to feel comfortable. And it’s totally natural for her to try and surround herself with things that help her forget her past. BUT does her past pain and suffering justify her acting like she’s Jeff fucking Dunham and using her dead boyfriend’s corpse as some sort of theraputic puppet? And furthermore, does her trauma allow her to still be a sympathetic character when she’s trapped a whole town of people in her pleasant alternative reality?
Because these are the questions we’re having to ask ourselves now when we watch the show. Trying to understand the pain she’s undergone and if that suffering justifies her exaggerated and morbid response to it. And of course if she’s a god damn necrophiliac. Because I don’t know what this morbid re-animation of Vision’s body would constitute as in a court of law. Because he’s technically not human. But he obviously had his own personality and free will. So I wouldn’t call him an animal either. So who knows where this falls under in terms of potential criminal charges down the line for Wanda. Not that she would ever go to jail, but we could all damn her in the court of public opinion. Because if he was deemed to be human, then she’s most definitely a creepy ass mother fucker. But if we think that Vision leans more to a very powerful robot with artificial intelligence, then I guess Wanda is buddying around and (presumably) fucking a very damaged and expensive blow up doll. So she’s just sort of emotionally attached, cheap, and a bit kinky. And no shame in that.
