John Cena set for blockbuster Summerslam return
Few superstars in WWE history hold the power that John Cena has over the WWE universe. Whether you cheered him on or sent out your boo’s, John Cena has been WWE’s standard bearer for the past 15 years. Over the past 3-4 years, we’ve seen Cena revert into part time status as he’s shifted to his career in Hollywood. It’s been over a year since we’ve seen Cena compete in a ring at all as the last time we saw him was at WrestleMania 36 in 2020. With WWE hoping to sell out a 70,000 plus crowd at Allegiant Stadium in Vegas for Summerslam, what better way to do that than with the 16 time world champion, John Cena.
Per reports, Cena is scheduled to make his return at the July 16th edition of Friday Night Smackdown where he is rumored to begin a feud with a man who many say is the current face of the WWE, Roman Reigns. Since returning in the summer of 2020, Reigns has went full on heel and adopted the mantle of the ‘tribal chief.’ This version of Roman Reigns has proven to be his best work and by turning heel, he’s opened up a realm of possibilities and unlocked a side of himself that many thought would never see the light of day. With Reigns coming off of a major WrestleMania victory over both Daniel Bryan and Edge, what better way to continue that momentum than with a Summerslam main event with Cena? The writing is on the wall for a massive program worthy of selling out a football stadium.
Gasoline was added to this fiery rumor mill when Cena was asked about what his plans for August 21st were and his response was that he would “hopefully be enjoying the summer.” A hint at Summerslam as this is the exact date scheduled for the event. Check out the clip below to see.
Roman Reigns was also asked about whether or not he would like to face John Cena at the event in which he responded with “anybody can get it.” These cryptic responses are vague, but for veteran wrestling fans they can often be seen through. Both of these men are on a collision course for Summerslam. While some form of secrecy is required, it’s not hard to figure out what’s coming next for these two.
Summerslam is set for August 21st, 2021 and will emanate from Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas, Nevada.
