Who Should Be The Saints QB Next Season?

Life after Drew Brees is something Saints fans have dreaded since he signed here in 2006. Now the dreaded day has come and we are now about to be without Drew Brees. Sean Payton on conference call today said he’s excited about Jameis Winston (who is a free agent) and he’s excited about Taysom Hill. I am not excited about either of them. Now, if you ask me I do not think any of those two are the heir to Drew. Who do I think should be the heir apparent? Here is a list of 3 QBs the Saints should look at:

3) Trey Lance (North Dakota State)

Trey Lance became a starter for the Bison in 2019 and put up a pretty nice campaign. In his first season as a starter at North Dakota State in 2019, Lance didn’t throw an interception in 287 attempts, setting the NCAA all-division record for passing attempts in a season without an interception. He completed around 67% of his passes for 2,786 yards and 28 touchdowns while running 169 times for 1,100 yards and 14 touchdowns. He led the FCS in passing efficiency at 180.6) and established the single-season school records for passing efficiency and total offense which totaled 3,886 yards. Unfortunately for Lance the 2020 season was canceled because of Covid and he was only able to play one measly game in which his stats were 149 yards passing with 1 TD and 143 on the ground with 2 TDs. Trey Lance would be an absolute steal at pick 28.

2) Kyle Trask (Florida)

yle Trask in 2020 put up one heck of a season and there is a reason he was in the Heisman conversation. Trask this season played out of his mind! He set multiple school records in 2020.  4,283 passing yards, 43 passing touchdowns to only 5 interceptions, and five 400 yard passing games all while leading the Gators to the SEC championship. Kyle Trask would be an absolutely great pick for the Saints. I would  love to see what Sean Payton could do with a young QB like Trask who has such a huge upside to him. Trak is the number 2 player on my personal Saints draft board (which I will post soon). If Trask is there at pick 28 when the Saints pick you just can not pass on him.

1) Matthew Stafford (Detroit Lions via trade

The elephant in the room in Detroit is what do they do with Matthew Stafford? With a new regime coming in I expect them to go get their QB in the draft. Lions pick 7 and Expect someone like Zach Wilson from BYU to be there. Trading for Stafford won’t be easy, but with someone like Dan Campbell as the new Lions coach being very familiar with the Saints I am certain he wouldn’t mind throwing us a little bone. The real question is what would it take to get Stafford to the Saints? Just a little brainstorm trade would be: ‘21 First round pick, ‘21 Second round Pick, Marcus Davenport, and Andrus Peat. Is it a perfect trade? No, but that is all I have and I also do not see anyone else coming up with anything. Getting Matthew Stafford as the Saints new starter would make the Saints instant Super Bowl contenders again. Even after an injured campaign he still put up over 4,000 yards. Now, people will say “why would we trade for him when he is always injured”? Stafford never had a complete team except maybe once during his time in Detroit. Putting him behind the Saints O-Line would be a huge upgrade for him. He would excel in Payton’s offense. Since June 2020 I have thrown out this idea and now many Saints beat writers and even Coach Jim Mora has said he would like to see the Saints make a move at Stafford because he also felt Hill nor Winston were the guy. Stafford in my opinion should be the Saints’ top target in the offseason.
